In this video we will be talking about the returning exotic the year 3 IceBreaker!
Bungie has finally decided to bring back the famous IceBreaker into year 1. This was together with the Black Hammer the go to sniper for strikes and nightfalls.
And a lot of people were disappointed when Bungie decided not to bring this into future releases of destiny. As a result the IceBreaker stayed at year 1 light levels and it was basically useless to use this in any light level enabled activities like nightfall, raids, trials and iron banner.
Every now and then you will still see people using this in normal crucible where light level is not enabled, but that happens rarely.

For all the new guardians among us ,  back in Year 1 the IceBreaker was next to the Gjallahorn the most sought after exotic. This is mainly due to the exotic perk which regenerates ammo so basically you are never out of ammo.
Back in year 1 this was super useful because the difficulty of nightfalls were way higher. In year 1 your team will be kicked to orbit when your team wipes during a nightfall, whereas now you will restart in the specific section in the nightfall where your team got wiped.
As a result people were playing very cautiously and most of the time a nightfall consist of at least one person with an IceBreaker sitting at the far back and sniping until the boss is dead.

So going into year 2 Bungie decided to leave IceBreaker behind because the gun is basically too overpowered for Pve purposes. The bungie designers even mentioned that it would be very hard to design strikes and raids having to take into account the ammo regen ability of the IceBreaker.

So now they decided to bring this back in year 3 the question a lot of players are asking me is... will the IceBreaker be broken?

Before we answer this question lets talk about year 1 again. Was IceBreaker broken in year 1? I dont think so. The fact that IceBreaker is used that often is because it was a counter to the high difficulty of the bosses. Bosses were like bullet sponges and to counter this people were looking for high DPS weapons like Gjallahorn and Black hammer and if you did not have any of them you will sit in a safe spot and take your time with an IceBreaker instead. Some people might find this to be cheating, but at that time this was the best strategy without facing the frustration of dying over and over again for pitiful rewards.

Now in year 3 things have changed a lot, the Bullet Sponge bosses are gone, the nightfall is not kicking you back to orbit anymore and most of the strikes or raids are designed so it will not have a safe spot anymore where you can just relax and snipe.
All of the strikes are now designed with traps so that you dont stay at a certain spot, if you have done the hive abomination or the Siva Sepiks prime strike you will know what I mean. Those annoying green traps which slows down your movement are everywhere and on top of that enemies are also now spawning behind you so there is no way for you to camp in a corner to snipe the boss anymore.
So i dont think that IceBreaker in year 3 is broken at all.

What does worry me is the effect that IceBreaker has on the game. Like I mentioned before the designers of the game needed to account for tactics like IceBreaker when they design a raid or strikes. When designers are creating an amazing game like destiny you dont want to limit these people with restrictions like “make sure this is IceBreaker proof.”
We are already seeing the first results of this in the redesigned siva strikes where they added a lot of the mentioned traps and additional enemy spawn points to encourage mobility within the game.

And The problem is not that there is isnt any mobility within the strikes, the problem is that the old strikes had high difficulties in the form of either bosses with a zillion health or that the boss fight is poorly designed. Take for example the Omnigul strike where enemies are spawning everywhere and you are being fired at from all places. Of Course everyone is sitting back in the entrance hallway because that is the only way to survive the strike.

And I am afraid... that the game... now is a victim of their own success. The IceBreaker was so good in doing its job that with every future design choice Bungie needs to make sure these activities are IceBreaker proof. So instead they solve this with traps and enemies spawning behind you , whereas they should just focus on giving the players plenty of opportunities to fight a strike or raid boss in different ways , so that everyone can bring in their favorite gun to their strikes and don't have to rely on certain guns like the IceBreaker or gjallahorn. Basically what I am trying to say is make the strikes and raids fun again!

So please bungie just focus on making great strikes and raids, if those encounters are fun … the players will have fun and thus no cheesy strategies are needed to be found by us the destiny community.
